Paper Canisters look great on retail shelves

Is it possible to make a brown paper tube look good? Yes!

Paper canisters are spiral paper tubes, wrapped with custom graphics, with a top and a weight-bearing base.

This “buy WHY doesn’t money grow on trees?” example (picture above) is what we refer to as Style 1A. It’s a beautiful way to package your product without using a boring square box.

This canister is made up of three separate tubes. The first is the “top,” seen on the right, leaning against the base. The top has a permanent metal end, similar to what you’d see on a Pringles canister.

The brown paper tube is called the “neck.” The top fits right over the neck. The neck fits snugly into the base, and gets glued into place. When the top is placed onto the base, the neck is completely hidden. Depending on preference and budget, the neck can also be made with all flat white paper to give it a clean, retail look.

The base matches the look of the top, but is much taller than the top to ensure stability when placed on a shelf. The base also has a permanent metal end. The metal ends we use are all silver in appearance.

We’ve tried gold and other colors, but our process scratches the finish. So, we stick to silver.

Our concrete form tubes are made right here in California.

Construction projects often need concrete form tubes. Concrete form tubes are paper tubes that get their name from their application.

These paper tubes are used to “form” concrete into round posts and round columns.

The inside diameter of the concrete form tube determines the outside diameter of the post or column.

We manufacture our concrete form tubes to order, meaning, we don’t keep any stock or inventory.

And although we manufacture to order, here are some common dimensions:

Common Inside Diameters: 6″, 8″, 10″, 12″ 14″, 16″, 18″, 20″, 24″

Common Lengths: 4 foot, 8 foot, 12 foot, 24 foot

Covid-19 Coronavirus Update

America’s manufacturing companies have been jolted by the coronavirus pandemic. We are no different.

Because our paper tubes support a variety of supply chains, we’re considered essential. As a toilet paper tube manufacturer, we’ve seen a rapid increase in need over the past two weeks.

To source paper tubes faster (many American companies buy their paper tubes from China), domestic manufacturers have been contacting us.

To support America’s supply chain, we’re doing all we can to produce as many paper tubes as possible, as quickly as possible.

If you too are looking for a domestic manufacturer of spiral paper tubes, please call our customer support directly at (562) 801-9705. We look forward to supporting you as you support our country.

Happy New Year! 2020 here we come!

It’s a new year, and our sights are set on providing you with the best spiral paper tubes and edge protectors available.

This year, we’re celebrating our 71st anniversary since George Hibard Sr. founded Spiral Paper Tube & Core. As a small business with fewer than fifty employees, the term “family business” takes on a whole new meaning.

Thank you to all of our clients who have trusted us for so many years!

Are you ready for Thanksgiving?

Life is about family and friends, and Thanksgiving is an opportunity to gather around a meal with the ones we love the most.

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, we wanted to remind everybody that we’ll be celebrating with our families as well.

We’ll be closed Thursday, November 28 and Friday, November 29. We’ll be back in the office on Monday, December 2. We look forward to serving you this holiday season.

Mailing Tubes, Poster Tubes, Shipping Tubes – Where do you order?

After numerous conversations with long-term, short-term and potential customers, we decided to launch an online store.

Just over four years ago, for the first time in our company’s history, we made ninety different tape and label cores available for purchase online. For customers who order by 11am, their orders ship that same day. Online customers even have the ability to choose between standard and expedited shipping.

3″ ID x .125″ Thick Tape & Label Cores

Throughout the United States, many customers transitioned from traditional, slower methods of ordering (email, fax, etc.) to online ordering. Online orders received by 11am ship via UPS that very same day. This is significantly quicker than our typical turnaround time of 10 business days and helps ensure our customers are able to process their orders faster.

E-Commerce is the Way of the Future

Like many businesses with e-commerce stores, we’re no different. E-commerce is the way of the future, and online ordering is here to stay. Just ask Amazon.

Consumers and customers want to receive their order pretty much as soon as the “Place Order” button is clicked.

Mailing Tubes, Shipping Tubes, Poster Tubes

We know our tape and label core customers prefer to order online so they can then process and ship their orders the following day. But what about mailing tubes, shipping tubes and poster tubes?

Where do you purchase your mailing tubes, shipping tubes or poster tubes?

If you use any of these products and are looking for an online retailer to make them available quicker than you’re currently able to find them, we would like to ask you to let us know. Our team is waiting to hear from you.

Comment below with the most common size(s) you use and we will take this into consideration as we move forward with our e-commerce store.

The 5 Most Common Paper Tubes

They say the average American uses 8 paper tubes a day…all without knowing it. Are you average? Above average? Below average?

If the “average” American uses 8 paper tubes, where are they?

How are they being used? Are they subconsciously using them? Do they realize it? Do you realize it?

Here are the 5 most common paper tubes:

  1. Toilet paper tube
  2. Paper towel tube
  3. Produce section plastic bags (wrapped around a tube)
  4. Tape (wrapped around a tube)
  5. Retail receipts (printed on paper wrapped around a paper tube)

Tomorrow, as you’re going about your daily routine, be on the lookout for paper tubes and discover how many spiral paper tubes you’re using.

The History of Spiral Paper Tube & Core – Los Angeles

After returning from World War II, George Hibard Sr., a Wisconsin native, set out to pursue his American dream when he started Spiral Paper Tube & Core in 1949.

A machinist by trade, and a USC Marshall School of Business student by night, Mr. Hibard designed, engineered and fabricated most of the machinery used to produce his first spiral paper tubes.

For the first 55 years, Spiral Paper Tube & Core was located at 8802 South Graham, Los Angeles, CA 90002.

George Hibard Jr., an inventor and economist, followed in the footsteps of his father and became President in the 1990s.

Within ten years, George had quickly increased the number of product lines to eight, including Edge Protectors, one of Spiral Paper Tube & Core’s most popular products.

In 2004, Spiral Paper Tube & Core moved its headquarters from South Los Angeles to its current location, 5200 Industry Avenue, Pico Rivera, CA 90660.

After 68 years in business, we continue to value quality, excellence, honesty and integrity. Our diverse product line is reaching farther and servicing more industries now than any time before.

Many of the employees that worked for Mr. Hibard are still with us today. And it is not uncommon for an old-time customer or vendor to call the office and share a few stories about the good ole days with the younger staff. We believe genuine connection best compliments our quality packaging products—it is our way of best serving you.

Top 2 Things We’re Most Thankful For

thanksgiving_blog_600x219

Nearly 70 years ago, Spiral Paper Tube & Core Company was founded by George Hibard Sr. Three generations and millions of paper tubes later, we’re still at it.

This Thanksgiving, we thought we would share the top 2 things we’re most thankful for.

1. OUR EMPLOYEES

Over the years, we have aimed to remain a true “small business,” maintaining somewhere between 45-50 employees at any given time. With this few number of people, it feels more like spending time with family than anything else.

One of our employees, Jesse, has been working with the Hibard family since he was 17 years old. In a pinch to make a delivery, and without a truck driver, George Hibard Jr. asked Jesse if he knew how to drive.

Jesse replied he had a driver’s license and had been driving for less than one year. George tossed Jesse the keys to a 26 foot bobtail delivery truck and suggested he take it around the block a few times before his first delivery.

Jesse is now in his 50s and continues to work with the Hibard family.

He has worked in nearly every department, held every title available, and, armed with a photographic memory, can recall obscure details of jobs we ran decades ago without batting an eye.

Over the years, we have watched many of our employees fall in love, get married, purchase their first home, become parents, raise children, navigate life’s many challenges, and truly live out the American dream.

2. OUR CUSTOMERS

In the beginning, customer acquisition was slow and hard. Every order, no matter how small, was a victory. With each order, customers displayed their trust in us to produce a quality product. Over the years, we have continued to gain trust and produce spiral paper tubes for an array of industries and applications.

Now, with decades of manufacturing experience under our belts, the confidence our customers have in us challenges us to continually “think outside the box.”

Throughout the years, we have had the opportunity to meet wonderful men and women from all over this great nation and abroad. Some buyers were links in the middle of their company’s supply chain. Others were just starting out, risking everything to bring their business idea into reality.

Cristina Bartolucci, celebrity makeup artist, was the latter.

According to the story circulating the office, Cristina walked in to our South Central Los Angeles factory 16 years ago and nearly 9 months pregnant.

A bit wobbly on her feet, she sat down with George Hibard Jr. and passionately explained her idea for a “lip plumping” cosmetic product. George, a married man with three teenage daughters, curiously listened.

Cristina, a UC Berkley graduate, was a long-time Hollywood makeup artist, but wanted to make the transition to a business owner by launching DuWop Cosmetics.

She had the product and was looking for a unique secondary packaging solution. She chose our 3-piece telescope tube. “Lip Venom” by DuWop hit the market and immediately dominated the cosmetic industry.

Lip Venom was globally featured in magazines and television spots for years to come.

We have much to be grateful for this Thanksgiving. We hope you do to!

See our Edge Protectors in action!

blog_cocos_edge_protectors_spiral_paper_600X200

We toured a major retailer on a recent visit to Washington state. We spotted our Edge Protectors in action and wanted to show you a few different ways they’re used.

The Edge Protectors in these photos have white paper on the outside (top) and kraft paper on the inside (less visible side).

If you look closely, you can see that some pieces seem to have multiple layers – this is an indication of a thicker piece.

In some photos, the Edge Protectors are being used to protect the product and primary packaging. In others, they’re being used to increase column strength.

Can you tell the difference?
